May 20 is International HR Day—and if you missed it this year, you’re not alone.
Because let’s be honest… HR is one of the most invisible yet impactful functions in any organisation.
So, where did this day even come from?
International HR Day was officially launched in 2019 by the European Association for People Management (EAPM) to recognise the growing importance of the HR profession.
What started as a European initiative has quickly become global, with participation across 80+ countries today.
And that growth tells you something important:
The world of work has changed… and so has HR.
From “HR admin” to “business driver”
There was a time when HR was mainly associated with:
- contracts
- compliance
- payroll
But today?
HR is right in the middle of:
- shaping culture
- driving transformation
- supporting leaders through uncertainty
- keeping organisations human in an increasingly digital world
In fact, research shows that 80% of HR professionals say their role has become more strategic in recent years.
That’s exactly why International HR Day exists: To make the invisible visible.
Why should we actually celebrate it?
Because most of the time, HR is doing some of its most important work… when no one is watching.
Think about it:
- When a company navigates a crisis smoothly
- When a leader is coached through a tough decision
- When an employee feels safe speaking up
- When teams stay engaged during change
There’s usually HR behind that.
Not loud. Not always visible. But absolutely critical.
What does this mean for the everyday employee?
Even if you never interact with HR directly, their work shows up in your day-to-day life:
- Fair policies
- Opportunities to grow
- Support during difficult moments
- A culture where you feel valued (or not—that’s also telling)
HR doesn’t just manage people processes… It shapes how work feels.
And when HR is strong:
- People stay longer
- Teams perform better
- Organisations become more resilient
In simple terms: Better HR = better work lives.
A small reflection for leaders
International HR Day isn’t just about appreciation posts (although those are nice).
It’s a prompt to ask:
👉 Are we giving our people function the space, trust, and influence to truly lead?
Because when HR is empowered:
- Culture becomes intentional
- People feel the difference
- And businesses perform better—not just today, but sustainaby
To the HR community
You don’t always get the spotlight. You carry a lot—often quietly.
But you are:
- Culture builders
- Problem solvers
- Change enablers
- And, more often than not… the steady hand when things get complex
And that’s worth recognising.
